AndroGel

AndroGel is a topical testosterone product used to treat men with low testosterone (hypogonadism). It may also be prescribed off-label as part of gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender men and some nonbinary individuals, as well as in select cases for women. As a gel, it delivers testosterone through the skin into the bloodstream.

It is one of the most widely used topical testosterone products in Canada and is available in multiple formats, including metered-dose pumps and single-use gel packets in different sizes.

These variants contain the same medication but differ in packaging and dosing flexibility. Each is identified by a unique Drug Identification Number (DIN):

  • DIN 02249499 — 1% metered dose pump
  • DIN 02245345 — 2.5 g gel per pack
  • DIN 02245346 — 5 g gel per pack

Because AndroGel is used daily and on an ongoing basis, supply disruptions may require switching to another gel (such as Testim or Taro-Testosterone Gel) or to a different type of testosterone. Differences in absorption and dosing mean that monitoring is usually needed when switching between products.

Because multiple gel products are available in Canada, shortages are often easier to manage by switching within this category, although format differences still matter.

Public Coverage

AndroGel may be covered by provincial and territorial public drug plans in Canada, but approval is often required.
