Testim Gel

Testim is a topical testosterone product used to treat men with low testosterone levels (hypogonadism). It may also be prescribed off-label as part of gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender men and some nonbinary individuals, as well as in select cases for women. As a gel, it delivers testosterone through the skin into the bloodstream.

In Canada, Testim is supplied as a single-use gel in unit-dose tubes, providing a consistent daily dose without the need for pumps or dose measurement. It is distributed in Canada by Knight Therapeutics.

Like other topical testosterone products, Testim contains the unmodified form of testosterone and is applied once daily. While it has a similar clinical effect to other gels, differences in formulation and packaging may affect preference and tolerability.

Because Testim is used daily and on an ongoing basis, supply disruptions can affect treatment continuity. If supply is limited, patients may need to switch to other gels (such as Androgel or Taro-Testosterone Gel) or to a different type of testosterone, such as injections. Differences in dosing, absorption, and application mean that monitoring is usually needed when switching between products.

Because multiple gel products are available in Canada, shortages are often easier to manage by switching within this category, although format differences still matter.

Public Coverage

Testim may be covered by provincial and territorial public drug plans in Canada, but approval is often required. Coverage depends on medical criteria set by each plan.
